STATEMENT: Democrat lawmaker using state resources to promote campaign related event

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana Republican Party Chairman Tim Berry issued the following statement regarding Democrat State Rep. Gail Riecken’s use of state resources to promote a campaign related event:

"Rep. Gail Riecken used state government resources to promote two mayoral campaign events set for Saturday in Evansville. Her campaign Facebook page and website promoted the events as meet and greet opportunities with ‘Evansville’s next mayor,’ while her official legislative office billed the events as opportunities for constituents  to get help ‘with any issues related to state government.’ Riecken’s lack of transparency in disclosing the true nature of these events is concerning. Constituents who attend to find out more about a legislative matter may wind up in the middle of a campaign rally. Rep. Gail Riecken’s ethical missteps certainly draw into question whether she is more focused on her constituents or her political ambitions.”

According to Riecken’s official legislative website, she plans to bring her office to two locations in the Evansville on Saturday, March 7. Riecken also touted the campaign event on an official legislative mail piece. However, Riecken’s campaign Facebook page and website touted the same events as a chance to, “Enjoy a cup of coffee, say hi, talk about issues and of course take a pic with Evansville’s next mayor…”  The Facebook post has since been deleted, but her campaign website is still promoting the events.
