INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Mar. 8, 2023) – Indiana Republican Party Chairman Kyle Hupfer tonight released the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed the Republican-led resolution to block a revision to Washington, D.C.’s criminal code that would have reduced maximum penalties “for offenses like murders and other homicides, armed home invasion burglaries, armed carjackings, armed robberies, unlawful gun possession, and some sexual assault offenses” and that would have further tied “the hands of police and prosecutors while overwhelming courts.”
The criminal code revision was supported by Democrat Reps. Frank Mrvan and André Carson.
“Democrat Reps. Frank Mrvan and André Carson must be extremely disappointed.
“Tonight, sanity and safety — not violent crime and criminals — prevailed.
“Democrat Reps. Mrvan and Carson have shown that they either value criminals over law-abiding citizens or that they will just vote however they think Joe Biden wants them to; neither is acceptable.
“They have once again proven that they’re out of touch with Hoosier values, and we’ll be sure to remind voters of that in 2024.”

Background
Prior to the House vote on the resolution, “House Democratic leadership told lawmakers that Biden was prepared to veto the measure.” So, “173 House Democrats voted along with what they thought was the White House’s stance that Biden would veto the resolution in an attempt to stand up for the District’s ‘home rule.’”
