What accomplishments are you most proud of during your previous time in office?
Transforming our downtown into one of the most beautiful and vibrant downtowns for a smaller city in the Midwest; keeping our city safe by fostering highly professional and engaged police and fire departments; using a ‘creatively frugal’ approach to renovating city buildings; completing a number of major redevelopments of key areas of the city to avoid blight and engage new investment; creating a city-wide bus service and commuter bus service to downtown Chicago; growing the best park department in northwest Indiana; and keeping the city looking beautiful and vibrant through public-private partnerships.
Describe your leadership style.
I have always fostered a leadership style that is collaborative and inclusive. (The divisive rhetoric and harsh words that often define our national political arena have no place in local governance.) Civic renewal in America must begin at the local level. This is where real life happens, where we have face-to-face conversations and work together based upon authentic relationships. Valparaiso is a shining example of collaborative, civil civic engagement, and I will strive to lead in a way that builds on this most vital attribute.
If elected, what are your biggest priorities for the city?
To complete the current major city projects on time and under budget, including the LINC Project, Journeymen Distillery, our major park initiatives dubbed "Valpo for All Generations," and the Grand Gardner Hotel.
Beyond these major projects, I will also work to maintain our high level of public safety and ambulance services, and ensure careful spending in city budgets to keep our taxes and fees affordable for the average family.
I will do all of this while maintaining the highest levels of integrity and transparency.
